THE “F5” (FASCINATING FACTOID FOR FANATICAL FLORIDIANS) –

It’s June 10th, 1991 and you’re an avid baseball fan residing in St. Pete. You’re smiling because you know today is the day you’ll finally get the news you and your sports-crazy pals in the community have been waiting for. “A major league baseball (MLB) team in Florida! Finally!” You think to yourself. “And it will be right here in my backyard. Good thing we already built the ballpark!”

The good news: you got the date of MLB’s announcement right.

The bad news is that you’ll have to wait another 7 years because MLB execs accepted the bid from Wayne Huizenga to plant the state’s first MLB franchise in South Florida. Beginning play in 1993 as the “Florida Marlins”, the team moved from Miami Gardens to its current location in 2012 changing its name in the process to the Miami Marlins.
