THE “F5” (FASCINATING FACTOID FOR FANATICAL FLORIDIANS) –

It’s June 12, 1913, and you’re waking up in Miami to the sound of a large gathering near the waterfront. You hop on your bicycle and ride towards the commotion, eventually getting swept into a crowd of 144 other bicyclists. Before you can blink you feel a strong sea breeze, realize the surface below your tires has turned to wood, and are almost decapitated by confused pelicans and seagulls.

Two and a half miles later, you and the group of riders are rapidly slowing down for two reasons: 1) you’ve reached the end of the bridge, and 2) the ground you’re now trying to pedal on is unpaved.

So was the scene at the opening of the Collins Bridge across Biscayne Bay which at the time was the longest wooden bridge in America. While the bridge’s completion aided in the development of the juggernaut which would become Miami Beach, on the day of the opening there wasn’t yet a paved road to the beach!
