Imagine it’s early October, 1783, and you’re a British officer enjoying cooling Florida temps after the grueling summer heat.
“The heat, the bugs, it’s absolutely crackers!” You say in your silver-tongued British accent. “Right on, then. I’m told the autumn here is smashing.” It could be worse, you think. The American Revolution has been raging and many of your countrymen have fallen to the resilient Continental Army.
Just then, you receive a letter. “Off you go, lad,” you say to the postman as you slice open the card, read a few words, and slump your shoulders in disgust. It seems your government has signed a treaty to end the revolution and return Florida to the Spanish. “Bloody rubbish,” you shout. You were just starting to like it here!
Many are surprised to learn that the Union Jack once flapped in Florida’s skies. Ceded by Spain to Britain in 1763 as part of the first Treaty of Paris, the land which became Florida was ceded back just 20 years later under a second treaty of the same name.
