THE “F5” (FASCINATING FACTOID FOR FANATICAL FLORIDIANS) –
Florida’s Treasure Coast owes its namesake to an event that took place there in late July just over 300 years ago.
The “1715 Treasure Fleet” refers to a collection of eleven Spanish ships making the trip home to Spain from the New World carrying a hefty load of…you guessed it…treasure. Specifically, massive quantities of silver and gold coins and other valuables. All eleven ships were lost in a hurricane off our state’s east coast, creating a veritable feast for hungry pirates who swarmed the area as news of the fleet’s demise spread.
The wreck has been the inspiration for movies, television and even popular video games. Salvaged treasure has been featured in various exhibits and some artifacts/coins are said to wash up on state beaches from time to time.
