Watching the Weather on the Beach

“What the actual %^&*?!”

-Floridians learning Labor Day is when much of the country closes the pool

As everyone’s favorite summer holiday returns next Monday, look for the next edition of everyone’s favorite newsletter to make landfall next Tuesday, 9/6.

Cautious insurance folks that we are, it’s not in our DNA to take both eyes off the tropics this time of year as the season approaches the peak. That said, my hope is that you’re comfortable keeping at least one eye on something fun this holiday weekend.

“W5” = WTH?! Think of our “W5” (Weekend Webinars for Work-Week Warriors) like an evacuation route from the unrelenting storm of work-week distractions. Here’s the plan: we offer two live (no exam!) 4-Hour Law & Ethics Update Webinars (one for P&C, one for Life/Health) on a Saturday each month through year-end. Check out the schedule for the W5 in September and beyond.

Webinars making landfall this week: P&C licensees get ethical, issues with commercial tenants. I could go on but your attention span is dropping faster than South Florida barometers on 9/2/35 (scroll to the F5 for the story) so I’ll get to it. Here are the highlights:

  • Hey P&C licensees: get some ethics! If you need your 4-hour Law & Ethics Update credit, join yours truly Wednesday morning and we’ll knock it out together.

  • Because “rent too d#mn high” is only one problem. How well do your commercial tenant insureds understand their insurance obligations and exposures? Commercial lines guru Cathy “On a Mission” Trischan returns Wednesday afternoon for an awesome hour of hot coverage takes and tips for commercial tenants.

  • Have you shared these storm resources with your insureds yet? We recently provided some info regarding CE compliance and to help prepare your insureds for Hurricane Season. If you missed it, here’s a link.

For more info about what we’re up to, see the list below and/or review the full Webinar Schedule on the website.

Finally, if you’re an unapologetic lover of our fine state blow to the bottom of this newsletter for this week’s “F5” (Fascinating Factoid For Fanatical Floridians.)

That’s all for now. Until the next round…cheers!

THE “F5” (FASCINATING FACTOID FOR FANATICAL FLORIDIANS) –

It’s the afternoon of September 2nd, 1935 and you just docked your boat at Long Key. “Ratsinfratsin!” you grumble to yourself, frustrated that the growing chop in the water is ruining your fishing plans. Last you heard, the Weather Bureau office in Jacksonville was confident that the approaching Bahamian storm is tracking south of you and evacuation was not recommended. You’d learn later how wrong and fatal their prediction would be.

The tiny island in the middle Florida Keys where you just docked is often credited with the landfall of the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, a Cat 5 monster which to this day is the strongest hurricane to landfall in the contiguous U.S.
