THE “F5” (FASCINATING FACTOID FOR FANATICAL FLORIDIANS) –

If asked to name a premiere institution of higher learning located in Tallahassee, we know a majority of Floridians would impulsively respond “the FISCE” and would be right to do so.

Alas, our office cannot claim the title of oldest continually used location for higher learning in our state. That honor goes to Florida State University. It was on the property of present-day FSU that the West Florida Seminary opened in 1855 and the location has been used for higher education since. On the site (once eerily known as Gallows Hill due to its use for public executions) of the former seminary sits the famed Wescott Building, arguably the most recognizable structure on campus, originally constructed in 1910.
