THE “F5” (FASCINATING FACTOID FOR FANATICAL FLORIDIANS) –
The pilgrims were posers.
Did you know that the first Thanksgiving did NOT take place in Plymouth, MA but was right here in St. Augustine in September, 1565? This article from the National Park Service is all the proof you need to show your pals from Mass yet another example of the Sunshine State stealing their legends.
Many historians agree that the first Thanksgiving celebration took place in St. Augustine in 1565. However, some Florida history super-geeks (that’s a compliment BTW) argue that it actually occurred one year prior and 40 miles further north. Guests at this party included French Huguenots and Timucuans who gathered near Jacksonville to celebrate the establishment of Fort Caroline along the St. John’s River.
