THE “F5” (FASCINATING FACTOID FOR FANATICAL FLORIDIANS) –
Each time someone refers to St. Augustine as the oldest European settlement the ghosts of Santa Maria de Ochuse have a chuckle. (I’m told they used to get upset but that around two or three-hundred years ago they decided instead to laugh it off. Good on you, ghosts!)
That’s the name of the settlement established in late August 1559 on the shores of Pensacola Bay – six years prior to St. Augustine’s founding. Settled by the crew of Spanish explorer Tristan de Luna y Arellano, it is considered the earliest multi-year European settlement in the continental United States. Unlike St. Augustine, “SMDO” wasn’t meant to last. Due to a series of gaffes by its leadership, a hurricane, and lack of local resources, the last of the colony’s residents were evacuated in August 1561. Europeans would not populate the Pensacola area again until 1698 when the Spanish returned and founded Presidio Santa Maria de Galve on the grounds where Naval Air Station Pensacola is located.
