THE “F5” (FASCINATING FACTOID FOR FANATICAL FLORIDIANS) –
“We didn’t have Gatorade. That made the difference.”
This quote, attributed to Georgia Tech football coach Bobby Dodd after his team’s loss to the Florida Gators in the 1967 Orange Bowl, may have been the spark that ignited the global sporting community’s interest in the beverage. Created in 1965 by a team of scientists at the University of Florida’s College of Medicine, the soon-to-be-ubiquitous beverage was designed to help the football team’s athletes replace fluids during physical exertion.
The research team originally intended to name the beverage “Gator-Aid” but decided against it since using the suffix ‘Aid’ would require proof that it had a clear medicinal use and that clinical tests had been conducted on thousands of people. Gatorade co-inventor Dana Shires explained, "We were told that you couldn't use that (‘Aid’) because the Food and Drug Administration prohibited that. That would classify it as something other than a cola or soft drink, so we changed it to ‘ade."
