THE “F5” (FASCINATING FACTOID FOR FANATICAL FLORIDIANS) –
It’s November 22, 1901 and you’re at the fairgrounds in Jacksonville attending a football game between Stetson and Florida Agricultural College (predecessor to the University of Florida).
This is the first college football game ever played in Florida and you’re skeptical. “I’ve read that the northern schools love it,” you say to others in the crowd. “But college football here? In Florida? It’ll never work!”
Stetson is clinging to a 6 – 0 lead when one of the FAC players breaks out of the pack for what looks to be a sure score. “Go, go, go!” You find yourself shouting. Excitement builds and you’re starting to understand what all the fuss surrounding this sport is about. Just short of the goal line the ball carrier goes a#s over elbow, dropping to the ground like a sack of Florida oranges. You hear him tell his teammates that he tripped over a tree stump. Reclaiming possession, the Stetson offense falls short of a second touchdown because a policeman on a horse got in the way.
“Oh for Pete’s sake,” the crowd collectively groans. “We’re gonna’ need a better stadium.”
